Renaissance Sonnets

Spencer seems to be wondering why his love does not love him back. Shakespeare seems to be praising a love, saying she was more lovely than a summer day. Shakespeare begans his sonnet with a question, however abandons questions thereafter. Spencer repeatedly asks questions in every section of his sonnet, excluding the last. I prefer Spencer's because i generally do not like happy-go-lucky expressions. I prefer Spencer's because it shows that he is a person that goes through pain. Shakespeare appears to be talking about love, and he analyzes his love from different angles praising it. He concludes his sonnet by saying that as long as he lives he will hold her high in his heart. Possibly even saying that he does not want to live withought her. Spencer talks about his love, and it not loving him back. He uses the metaphors fire and ice to describe the different feelings amongst them, and he concludes by saying that love is so powerful, it can even alter set forces such as nature.

Shakespeare Sonnet 130

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun; (A)
Coral is far more red than her lips' red; (B)
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; (A)
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. (B)
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white, (C)
But no such roses see I in her cheeks; (D)
And in some perfumes is there more delight(C)
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. (D)
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know (E)
That music hath a far more pleasing sound; (F)
I grant I never saw a goddess go; (E)
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: (F)
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare (G)
As any she belied with false compare. (G)

The first section is talking about Shakespeares woman. He describes her as having red lips and dun colored breasts. She also has black hair. The second section states she has evenly colored cheeks, and apparently she has bad breath. The third section states she is a bad singer, but he likes to listen to her. The conclusion states that even though she is imperfect, Shakespeare still loves her.

Spencer sonnet 75

One day I wrote her name upon the strand, (A)
But came the waves and washed it away: (B)
Again I wrote it with a second hand, (A)
But came the tide, and made my pains his prey. (B)
Vain man, said she, that doest in vain assay (B)
A mortal thing so to immortalize, (C)
For I myself shall like to this decay, (B)
And eek my name be wiped out likewise. (C)
Not so (quoth I), let baser things devise (C)
To die in dust, but you shall live by fame: (D)
My verse your virtues rare shall eternize, (C)
And in the heavens write your glorious name.(D)
Where whenas Death shall all the world subdue, (E)
Out love shall live, and later life renew. (E)

In the first section spencer talks about writing his loves name in the sand. Spencer's love was causing him pain, and he symbolized the water as taking it away. In the second message we learn that spencers love called him vain. Spencer does not like being called vain and wants that to be wiped from his reputation. In the third message he talks to his love and says that she will live on in fame. He says his sonnet will allow her to live in thought eternally, and even while he is dead in heaven he will be thinking about her. In the conclusion Spencer says that no matter what happens, he will always love her, and they will always be together.

My sonnet (im NOT suicidal. just to clear that up)

What is more wonderful than life
The gift to open two eyes
How horrible would be to end by knife
A greater tragedy is not but lies
TO breathe to suffer to live with pain
to anger to cry to live with distress
Escape comes only from forgetting thy name
Suicide improves sorrow tis only a guess
Thoughts are thoughts but dreams remain cold
Blue days you may awake and hear
Sense is made from what you are told
A man withought much should hold possesions dear
Tis all you have, And surely all you can
In Dark of Night, death abandons your hand
